North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo offers a Post-Graduate Year 1 (PGY1) residency.

Program Overview

The NMMC residency program received accreditation by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) in July 1994.

The PGY1 pharmacy training at NMMC provides the resident with the depth and breadth of skill of an experienced practitioner. Our 52-week program offers post-graduate training that centers on the development of the knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to pursue rational drug therapy.

In addition to required areas of study, the program offers a broad range of elective rotations and additional learning experiences through the 52-week position.

Purpose

PGY1 Program Purpose: PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

“Our work-life balance is very good. I like the rotating schedule of Seminar Day. Preceptors are always available for questions and mentorship. The orientation and training month on a large general medicine floor was very beneficial and set me up for success and managing a heavy patient load.”

“This residency program offers several unique learning opportunities in different fields of pharmacy. I was happy to participate in the Psychiatry and Oncology electives, but other options like Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine looked interesting! Also, I enjoyed being able to see clinical, ambulatory and central pharmacy operations."

“The opportunity to develop skills in TPN management sets this program apart. Having a pharmacy-driven anticoagulation protocol is also something I believe sets us apart. The pharmacy staff is very knowledgeable and are great resources for residents.”

“The pharmacy staff (preceptor or not) is always willing to answer questions and help in any way they can. The autonomy, variety of electives, “family” feel, being able to shape/form the residency to your personal interests and career needs are all great strengths of this program.”
